Bangladeshi film ‘Tales of Banishanta’ premiered at Hof Int’l Film Festival

A 66-minute documentary was recently shown at the Central Kino Hof Theatre, highlighting life on Banishanta, a small island in Bangladesh where around 150 women rely on sex work for survival. These women live in a government-licensed brothel, facing constant struggles from harsh weather and other challenges.

The film, directed by Md Shahadat Hossain, focuses on four young sex workers and an older woman who has spent her life in the brothel, helping others survive despite the odds. Over three years, the film crew documented their daily lives, capturing the emotional experiences, the close-knit community, and the natural beauty of the surrounding rivers, contrasted with the harsh realities of their situation.

Among the women featured are Reena Akhter, Popy Begum, and Rupali Farzana, each with a unique story. Another screening of the documentary is scheduled at the same venue on 28.10.2024
